Write tests, using file copy on Win7 are ok, ~70-80MB/sec. The burst seems somewhat lower than others, ~145MB/sec. With HDTach and a Samsung 1TB 7200 RPM F3, I see average read of 112MB/sec. This Kingwin was on sale locally, so I decide for slightly more than 10, to try it, and I was amazed because it performs quite well compared to more expensive ones. Overall Review: I've tried a number of different "toaster" style docking stations with eSATA (I'm mainly interested in eSATA), and while most work, when you test them using something like HDTach, you see less than optimal performance.

Very inexpensive if you can still find it.Ĭons: Can take both 2.5" and 3.5" drives, but as others have pointed out, there really isn't any provision (like a "flap") for securing a 2.5" drive in place. Comes with 1 each eSATA cable, USB cable, power dongle :( I am requesting a replacement, and will post here again with the results. This is my first 1-egg rating for a product purchased from newegg. When the price w/rebate for the Kingwin EZ-Dock unit fell within my range, I quickly placed an order with newegg and within a few days it was on my doorstep. I immediately liked the concept, so I purchased and still use that device for pulling files off my older PATA drives.

Overall Review: A couple years ago, after getting tired of the hassle of swapping bare PATA drives in & out of an external enclosure, I tried a device similar to but a bit more primitive than this EZ-Dock. The Mac did not recognize the drive via USB. You’ll need to get another USB board for the drive off ebay, or an external eSATA or USB/SATA dock (Like the Kingwin EZ-Dock), and remove the drive from the My Book and put it in there to. The Mac did mount the drive thru eSATA, but after various amounts of time and for no obvious reason, the drive would dismount. If the drive does not work in another system, then your USB to SATA interface has likely failed (assuming it’s not the cable or the port on the computer).

The PC never mounted the drive thru either the USB or eSATA connection. I placed a working SATA drive (formatted for both PC & Mac) in this unit and tried connecting to a PC and then a Mac via eSATA and also USB. I think the construction is adequate for normal use, but would prefer all-in-one rather than having a separate power supply.Ĭons: Unfortunately, the EZ-Dock I received was DOA.

The Kingwin EZ-Dock includes both USB & eSATA cables, a 2.5" disk with cloning software for use with a PC (not Mac), a separate power supply, and it has a 1-year factory warranty. Pros: When it works, this type of device is the fastest and most economical way to mount bare SATA hard drives to your tower or laptop via USB or eSATA.
